NaPoMo poem #16
This is the sixteenth of the poems I will be writing each day here in April, in honor of National Poetry Month, as proclaimed by the Academy of American Poets.
• NOTE: these poems will all essentially be early drafts, so edits may occur after their initial posting.
15 Days To Go
•
I just sit here and stare
my creative cupboard’s bare
I find I just can’t write
but I can’t be up all night
not when there’s still 15 days to go
no matter how hard I try
I just come up dry
I am most bereft
I’ve nothing poetic left
and there’s still 15 days to go
I’m not at all amused
that my muse has refused
to offer inspiration
and to add to my frustration
there’s still 15 days to go
I think perhaps I’ll draw
and hope that this will thaw
my rock-hard writers freeze
I beseech you sweet muse – please
there’s still 15 days to go
I’ve struggled and I’ve stammered
I think I’ll just get hammered
if I really tie one on
the pain will all be gone
screw it, it’s only 15 days – ya know

I think we’re all feeling like that around now. Aren’t you a day ahead, or are you posting very early in the morning? It’s still April 16th in New Zealand and we are a day ahead of the US, almost

Hi Catherine -
It was 1:47 AM, April 16th here in Oregon when I posted this new piece, as you can see by the date stamp at the bottom of the post - and counting the 16th, there are 15 days to go…
Truth is, I’m still brimming with new poems - I was just exhausted when I began writing tonight, and this little ditty just popped out…

Sometimes, you just gotta go with what’s in your head! I like “rock-hard writer’s freeze”!

Love the repetition of the last line. And I know that feeling all too well.

Hilarious! The last stanza was a definite lol. I agree with Kimberly on how well the last line repetition works.

LOL I LOVE the repetition too. I think it works really well in this poem. And, for someone who didn’t know what to write, you’ve written a BEAUTIFUL poem!

I know what you mean. I’ve had a tough time of it all the way through! Like a dork, I put off the writing until bedtime and then I am left to post (usually) an embarrassing little ditty. But I continue on. It’s about bedtime. Time to write a really bad poem.

Love this. Though I’m still writing poetry with a lot of enthusiasm, you capture those moments that come and go when I’m pretty sure nothing is going to come. I’m still amazed when it does.

I am glad you pulled this one out, didn’t quit. I rather like your sight.
