Like drizzled honey
the sun through the treetops
paints my face in golden warmth
my thoughts drift to you
and the tall ships in Beaufort Harbor
their sails aglow
etched in shadows
cast by their riggings
and the masts of adjacent ships
you commented how the patterns
reminded you
of abstract charcoal sketches
the artist in you
always interpreting your world
sunshine made radiant your gentle face
your emerald eyes fired to a sparkle
squinting in the rays
your smile
brighter than the sun that day
I stared captivated
watching your eyes dance
among the docks and ships
that unfolded like a still life before us
watching your coral lips
sculpt your words
wishing the moment
would last forever
not knowing
how soon it would not
could not
did not
this morning
my memories
amble sweetly
back through time
I find solace
in this cuddled sunlight
knowing it warms you
as you rest
peacefully
in the sun-drenched meadow
where last I closed
your beautiful emerald eyes

Very romantic, Rob. I especially love these lines:
‘you commented how the patterns
reminded you
of abstract charcoal sketches’
and
‘watching your eyes dance
among the docks and ships
that unfolded like a still life before us’.
What a lovely way to describe warmth, as ‘cuddled sunlight’.
Glad this engaged you Kim… 🙂 What did you think of my line… “…in the sun-drenched meadow where last I closed your beautiful emerald eyes.”
I really like those lines, too!
Thank you Melissa, I am pleased they resonated with both of you… 🙂
What a very very romantic tale with such a very sad ending. I love what you did… I hope to hear you read it.
Thank you Björn. I’ve already set my alarm for tomorrow morning, now we’ll see if I have the alertness and strength to get out of bed. Not always easy for me early in the morning, given I never get to sleep before three or 4 o’clock in the morning… 🙂
Your surrealistic art creations giving your beautiful poetry a “run for the money!” Both are wonderful, Rob. See you tomorrow I hope. Making every attempt to rise early. Monday – Friday I am up at 5:30am, take my son to Safeway for his 6am shift .. too dark for him to walk safely.
Thank you so much Helen. I have already set my alarm for tomorrow morning — we’ll see if I’m able to wake up and get out of bed. It’s really really difficult these days, but I will genuinely try. I miss the live sessions.
Oh, that closer line kills, Brother.
Thank you Ron, ‘preciate my friend… 😉
Yes this is so romantic and if full of the understated affections. Well Done.
Thank you Alan… 🙂
This is lyrical, romantic, and cool.
I dig this image: “cuddled sunlight” – great phrase.
Thank you Bro… 🙂
Tall ships, romance, sensuality … a captivating piece!
Thank you Rosemary… 🙂
Hello Rob, I thought this poem was exquisite. It was nice to meet you yesterday at the meeting. Robbie
Thank you. Nice meeting you as well, Robbie. What a wonderful addition to our community you are, your bringing your South African influence is such a treat for us. And what a fascinating background you have my friend. I have been in a number of online poetry communities over the past two-plus decades. I had never missed an OLN Live until the past two months, owing to age-related health challenges — so it was nice attending again yesterday. What a wonderful surprise to discover you. Welcome to our dVerse community.
Cuddling sunlight is a delightful thought. Also, your art captures light and shadow exquisitely.
Thank you so much Penelope… 🙂
Romantic to the hilt, Rob!
Thank you Punam, very much… 🙂
Oh, those emerald eyes closing… very beautiful
Thank you Deborah… 🙂
Beautiful, Rob! It was great to hear you read this on Saturday.
Thank you Merril, it was a pleasure to be able to join in the community again… 🙂

A truly romantic and beautiful poem, Rob!
Thank you Sara… 🙂
Rob, you had me at that first wonderful stanza. To reach the conclusion gave me a pang. Sorry to miss you at OLN live last Saturday, but I was at my 3-year-old granddaughter’s birthday party.
Very cool — HAPPY BIRTHDAY 🙂
