Critical Decision

Original DDE™ surrealistic art: “Critical Decision” by: rob kistner © 4/1/24

Leaning on my folded fist
propped against my jaw

my elbow’s solid on my desk

eyes stern
staring
aflame with inconclusion

face is taut
head cocked
tilted to the left

contour of confusion

skull upon the finger bones
in weighted indecision…

chocolate or vanilla

  1. Rob, you got me, but in the best of ways. The way your figure is sitting reminds me of how my dad used to sit sometimes. He was serious guy but he did have his lighthearted moments. His favorite flavor of ice cream was butter pecan.

    1. Certainly not at my house Melissa — we are ice cream freaks. My favorite flavor is two, both from Tillamook Ice Cream: 1.) Dark chocolate chip, which uses Ghirardelli dark chocolate in vanilla bean; 2.) Oregon Black Cherry … both are gourmet ((((yummmmmm)))) good!

  2. Ha… here I thought it was a life changing decission… personally I would go with vanilla… chocolate often dissapoint as ice-cream

  3. For starters: no ice cream finer than Tillamook. There are two half gallons in our freezer right now. I am an ice cream freak too.
This has to be one of the best ekphratic poems ever. You captured his mood perfectly. Love his hands and the look in his eyes. And of course I had to giggle at the end with everyone else.

  4. Great poem – I chuckled at the final line.
I’m looking forward to the warmer months and going out for ice cream with friends. Last year one friend and I discovered a place that specializes in dipped ice cream cones – I got a matcha ice cream, dipped in white chocolate, and then rolled in oreo pieces. It was amazing.

  5. Chocolate please! And this after “skull upon the finger bones” contemplation. Very cleverly penned, Rob, and much to my enjoyment.
