April’s Fool

Early spring can make one
forget better judgement’s rules
filled with lust’s anticipation
desires sparkle bright like jewels

April’s fey intoxication
can make winter’s pale heart yearn
to feel this grand unfolding
to see nature’s great mandala turn

this sweet inebriation
can spark love’s eager soul
can ignite the rash impulsive
can draw one to the jester’s role

the elixir of the world in bloom
is to the lusting lovelorn
a most dangerous of potions
causing clear thought to be stillborn

remember well and here be warned
passion’s frenzy can be cruel
spring’s fever, it is well known
can make one act sweet April’s fool

…here’s a little April foolishness…

…a bit less foolish…

  1. Love this! “to see nature’s great mandala turn” what a line this is! Ah….the enticement of a spring that is not quite here yet! So well done. Oh yes….that hint of spring at the end of March or the very beginning of April can make one act the Aprils fool…go out and by pansies to place on the balcony…I learned my lesson on that one a few years ago. You’d think with my 1997 April 1st experience I would have known better!

  2. We are a village of April Fools here following balmy days of sunshine and high 60’s, with freeze warnings tonight and a bitter wind in the 30’s this afternoon! April Fool!

    1. Thank you Ingrid, but I am not certain I have challenged myself consistently in recent weeks. My work has been up and down. I like this one, and also my haibun about cherry blossoms, and a couple others in thd past couple months — but I am well off my game, beginning several weeks before my Edgrrr died, after which I have been angry and quite unevenly focused. My health has been slipping in a number of ways this past COVID year, and I am trying to write through, what has been a growing depression. I am now fully vaccinated, so I can return to the care of my doctors, which I have avoided for the past year’s fear of COVID. Anyway, thank you for your always kind words Ingrid.

  3. Ahh, the passion of springtime blooms.
I really like your ending lines,
“spring’s fever, it is well known
can make one act sweet April’s fool.”
The foolish mistake I often make is to think that I can plant more plants than my yard can hold and my body can dig.
    Enjoy this month of poetry.
