Startled

Suddenly
a beautiful doe
bounds onto the forest trail
standing proud
golden in sunlight
drifting down dreamlike

she considers me briefly
then disappears
quick as a stolen glance
quiet as hushed breath

leaving only breezes
whispering the old growth canopy

and my quickening heartbeat

  1. I like the way deer silently appear and just as silently fade back into the forest. I’d love to see one with the sunlight beaming down on them. There is the time of day just before the sun goes behind the trees, when they graze at the edge of the woods that I love. Nature at its finest and a nice thrill for the heart when they appear.

  2. Dear prancing through Bend are a daily occurrence, I never fail to sense their magic, feel their fragility, appreciate their beauty. A lovely Quadrille, Rob.

    1. Thank you Helen! I‘ve deer suddenly appear, like magic, on the trail ahead more than once hiking the old growth forests on the western slope of Mt Hood. Always startles and thrills… 🙂
