And So

“sweet memories of my youth”

And So

~

and so
I think of her
and wonder

what was the fire
that burned so bright
and raged so fierce
as to consume complete

our essence
left embered char
smoldered ashen

that in its heat
and fury
could not sustain

back I drift
to fall upon
the tenderness of youth

the satin skin
the comely gaze
the velvet touch

a silken voice
rising
to lust and longing

to impatience

to immortality

its soulful siren
so seductive
the nectar of all forbidden

the breathless joy
of sweet innocence

when the wonder
stirs to every mystery
and the spirit lights
to every spark

igniting passion’s pyre

to leave one spent
in blissful ruin
at story’s end

tender memory
of the throaty whispers
of promised pleasures
sweetly secreted
in her virgin kiss

and so
I think of her

remembering
with no regret

savoring the subtle linger
harbored in my heart
of the taste
of her lips

long ago
at seventeen

~ ~

“lips lush as cognac
open softly to kisses
urgently linger”

  1. It’s a tough road to walk down without seeming either maudlin or moving in dodgy directions. You made this poem with style and grace. Eloquence abounds…

    It’s a sweet, lovely poem.

  2. gave me some nostalgia of my own. thanks. Very sensual and sensory. I love that in poetry.
I would like to say as lovely as the word “concupiscence” is, it broke the rhythm for me, it pulled me out of beauty of your poem.
I will be visiting you often. peace

    1. Ah yes, sweet memories Bjorn. 🙂 This poem was sparked by a photo of my high school sweetheart I stumbled upon in 2010 when going through an old box of poems. I did couple revisions for this prompt and added the haiku.

    1. Thank you Sanaa. Just watvhed a shiw on Hulu entitled All Night, and it made me think of my high school honey, al I remembered this poem I wrote years ago. So I dug it up and tighted it up.

        1. You are welcome Sabio. I enjoyed your poem. We will simply have to endure being the cool guys of dVerse – but I think I’m up to it… 😉

  3. Oh, the passion of a seventeen year old. I enjoyed the sensuality of the lines:
    ‘tender memory
    of the throaty whispers
    of promised pleasures
    sweetly secreted
    in her virgin kiss’.

    1. Yes Jade, I started writing poetry when I was 16, first as lyrics for songs. It is fun to go back reading through old pieces I’ve written, revising the ones remaining that are worth archiving. From 1963 to 1996, they were all handwritten on paper stored in boxes. Through moving, my own carelessness, and one ugly divorce, many of those are gone – but many remain. I have been digging through what remains and transcribing the ones of merit to digital files. I also lost my poems from 1999 to 2003 because they were on a laptop that was left on a airplane (I am an idiot) and was never found – and the files were never backed up. Every poem in digital format from 2003 to now is backed up and many have been uploaded to my Image & Verse site. I have probably 1,000 poems of reasonable merit remaining. Not all transcribed digitally just yet. I have lost more than that over the years, but the many from the early years would not have been worth keeping.

    1. Thank you Jim. I will never forget my first “all-in” girlfriend. We were both 16 when we met. We had our first real, uninterrupted “alone time” when we were 17, and her parents were gone for a weekend. Great “first time” memories from those two days of romance and passion! These are some of thoses memories, filtered through 6 decades… 🙂

  4. Glad to be here, Rob.

I too stopped writing, and I don’t even know why.
Maybe I write two poems a year.

Your poem touches me at some level.

FYI, I got married in May 2017. Have been busy with that too, setting up my home and getting to know him…
