Bridge of Dreams

~

possessed of all it is I am
I sigh a sigh of longing
I wish for what it is I’m not
across the bridge of dreams

I lust not for kingly right
nor scepter gold to rule a realm
I seek to fill my barren soul
across the bridge of dreams

worldly wealth I do not need
nor power over minions
enlightenment is all I seek
across the bridge of dreams

    1. It is as though there are two types of human those that wealth, property and power are everything and then there are those that see the beauty of the world and relish every moment of their lives being able to live and share their life and love here.

      1. Hi Rob, I think that is your name. My experience some people want to enrich their pockets, and seek superficial instant gratification, from a safely insulated life – with a more, more, more mindset. Others seek to enrich their soul, their being, and seek deeper satisfaction, often from the more artistic elements of life. Now, having said that, not all people of wealth are shallow and not all people of modest means are deep.

    2. “I seek to fill my barren soul
across the bridge of dreams” Beautiful and seeking enlightenment is the path although not an easy one

    3. When I taught Chaucer to kids during my student teaching, I taught Joni by comparison! Our modern (at the time) storyteller, and “Both Sides Now” was the poem of hers that I taught! That was in 1969. So, this brought back memories. A nice pairing with you poem of reflection. Thanks, Rob.

      1. Wonderful clas that must have been Judy. I absolutely love this new interpretation she put on her classic song. She fid this new interpreation to be part of her gloriously besutiful ballet, entitled, “The Fiddle nd the Drum”. She has reimagined many of her most haunting songs and created a breathtaking modern ballet. Here is a link to the complete presentstion.

    4. Such a beautifully expressed longing in this, Rob! We were made for more than this world offers, I believe. I love Joni Mitchell’s interpretation of Both Sides Now 🙂

      1. Thank you Lynn. When Joni first wrote “Both Sides Now” back in 1968 for Judy Collins, Jani also made a recording of it that was bouncy and wonderful. But now that Joni is a mature woman, very worldly wise, challenged by health issues – this newer recording she has made of her song is so so deep, and touching. Makes me cry.

    5. Rob, I love the simple construction, with simple words, that holds such spirit. I look at dreams 2 ways, the earthly dreams, like goals/wealth/etc., but also the realm of dreams that happen when we sleep. I am choosing to look at your poem as a bridge to that place we go in our dreams. This is a path to enlightenment, but not as a destination. We go there while sleeping and bring the gifts back to our waking selves, which eases our paths. Your poem fits either waking or sleeping concepts. I love it! <3

    6. Oh Rob such a special invite … my favourite Joni song, a very welcoming bright red bridge but it’s the enlightenment beckoning that will lure me across .. see you there 🙂
