Sing

Sing

•

a tear can cloud the brightest day
song will brush aside the clouds
is not sadness just a passing state
but what a melody can chase away

a tune played true with voice in tow
little sorrows flee from such display
thing is, so few will dare seek joy
and thus succumb to feeling low

yet when life is lived in harmony
what hurt you have will drift and fade
joy in chorus will lift the heart
it swells the soul in reverie

is it not foolish to keep bliss entombed
to see not but the dark and gloom
sing — and laughter will light the room

a song is but a little thing
and yet what joy it is to sing

  1. Thanks for your kind words on my poem, Twinkling Stars. My daughter called in from the road last night, so I read her the poem; tears fell to both of us.

I’m so sorry for your loss; I’ve several friends who are struggling with the death of their children — it’s got to be the hardest task that ever falls to a parent. And I wrote the poem with that awareness; that this small separation of months and miles could so easily become that larger one…

I love your image for this post; fascinating effect! Looking forward to exploring more of your work!

  2. Rob,

This is lovely, tender, heart-felt, all the things life brings us. And your use of the prompt, introduced as it is at the beginning of each line, is clever.

I read the comment above, as Diane is my friend. I thought her “Twinkling Stars” was marvelous. I’m glad the two of you have made acquaintance.

I thought I had left a comment but I guess I didn’t. Getting to old.

I enjoy your poetry. You have a real talent for writing.
Thanks for stopping by Old Grizz’s cave.

  4. Diane –
It’s been a number of years since I lost Aaron, and by and large, I have but warm memories of him. But sometimes, out of the blue, I read see or hear something – and the pain is like a knife wound… and the tears come. It is a bittersweet thing, because with the sorrow comes the profound sense of love I feel for him — still. These days, the tears subside quickly, and I am left with just sweet recollection.

  5. Rob:

Loudly he sang his song– for singing is the best kind of joy and the most gentlest of tears,,,,,

And here I was sad tonight because my son moved to his own place and left the nest — perspectives

  6. I couldnt agree more, for sure those drops that swell up your eyes can smear a bright day. But then as you said so lovely and rightly, sing and laughter could light up a room!

  7. Hi Rob;

    It’s Amity!

It’s my first time to contribute here at Carry On Tuesday and the prompt given is just as inspiring!!!

I could see fellow OSI writers here and you are one…:))

You made a very inspiring poem here…yes, that’s what a song to us is…in many ways we cannot decipher how magical they can be…:))

I love to sing, I can carry a tune, but music doesn’t love me…

I love so many songs, they inspire and they make me feel sad at the same time…:))

    Have a nice day Rob!

  8. “Sing” is a vehicle poem motivating the singer to change a feeling from sadness “tear” to joy. The blues are sung from the depths of the soul, explored. For the heart to open again it must go through those places of the heart it tries to escape. What a better way to escape the burden of being down on the ground emotionally than with a song. A transformational poem motivating emotion to move through and into another mode of expression, to “Sing” to free, to release the harmful emotions that can hold down a soul making it depressed, etc. Without a means of release a soul can die before the body. Your poem is spiritually very inspirational and shows the reader a way out of negative and hurtful emotional burdens. Simply to “Sing” away the blues and depression! Excellent!
